Goodbye 2025, it was great having you around. A number of businesses and services will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Here’s what you can expect to be open and closed on New Year’s Day.

Grocery Stores/Fast Food

If you’re hoping to stock up on groceries, you’ll be out of luck this New Year’s Day as grocery stores will be shut. They’ll open again on Friday. However, some fast food restaurants will welcome customers, with most opening between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m.

The following services will not be operating on New Year’s Day:

All administration buildings

Home Child Care

Public Health Clinics

Regional libraries

Regional museums

Seniors’ Services

The operations at the Region of Waterloo Airport won’t change, but all admin offices will remain closed.

Warming Centres

Warming centres will be available on New Year’s Day at these locations:

150 Main St. in Cambridge from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

150 Frederick St. in Kitchener from 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Overnight warming centres will also run at 298 Lawrence Ave. in Kitchener and 6 Cambridge St. in Cambridge.

Garbage collection

No garbage collection is scheduled for New Year’s Day.

If your regular pickup is Thursday, it’ll happen on Friday instead. Garbage collection planned for Friday has been moved to Saturday.

Transfer stations in both Cambridge and Waterloo will not be available for residential drop-offs.

City of Waterloo

All arenas, sports facilities and government buildings are shut down. The outdoor rink at Waterloo Public Square may stay open depending on the weather conditions. You can find a complete list here.

City of Cambridge

All government buildings along with community centres and sports arenas are closed as well. Check here for the full list.

City of Kitchener

Kitchener City Hall will operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., though no in-person services will take place during that time.

The community centres, pools, and Kitchener Market are all closed today.

The skating rink at Carl Zehr Square is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A complete rundown of all venues and their hours can be found here.

Beer Stores and LCBO

All Beer Store and LCBO outlets are not open on New Year’s Day.

Grand River Transit

Grand River Transit continues its winter holiday service hours from Dec. 22 through Jan. 4.

MobilityPLUS service remains active; however, all subscription trips set for New Year’s Day have been cancelled.

All Grand River Customer Service Centres are closed today.
