A new year brings fresh opportunities for growth, and with that comes a lot of development news, including both new projects and demolitions making headlines this year.

At #1 is the old Knob Hill Farms grocery store in Oshawa. Most of the building, which has been around for 128 years, is coming down as Metrolinx prepares to build a new GO station there.

Across from the future station, a mixed-use project is underway where a glass factory operated for over a century. The developer is seeking incentives to create more than 5,400 residential units across eight buildings – one reaching up to 42 stories – along with 63,000 sq. ft. of commercial space.

The Oshawa Centre shopping mall also caught attention recently, as the owners announced plans to partially tear down the Sears site-residential development could be an option-and they’ll be looking for a new tenant for the Bay location on the opposite side of the mall.

Pickering has approved its largest recreation project ever, which includes twin ice pads.

A portion of new units will focus on affordable housing as Durham Region progresses with plans to redevelop a former school building that’s been around for 102 years in Oshawa.
