The cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge have announced a snow event due to a winter storm passing through the Waterloo region on Friday, which could bring up to 15 centimetres of snow by evening.
A special weather statement was released on Thursday by Environment Canada, warning of total snowfall between 10 and 15 cm, accompanied by winds gusting at speeds of 50 to 80 km/h. The snow might mix with rain at times on Friday afternoon and into the evening.
Kitchener residents must remove any vehicles parked on city streets by 2 a. m. Saturday. This parking ban will last for 24 hours to give snow plows time to clear the roads.
<p"During a snow event, the city's "tag-and-tow process takes effect," according to a release issued on Friday.
“The ticket for parking on the street during a snow event is $100. Vehicles may also be towed if a snow operator finds they cannot navigate down a city street and contacts enforcement staff who are patrolling.”
In Waterloo, residents have until 6 p. m. Friday to move their cars off the streets or face being ticketed and possibly towed, as stated by the city.
“The parking ban will remain in place for at least 24 hours,” said the city in a release, noting that overnight parking exemptions will not be permitted.
The city also reminded residents that there’s a Community Safety Event street parking ban in effect in the university district from 12:01 a. m. until 11:59 p. m. Saturday, March 14.
Cambridge has implemented its own parking ban as it declares a snow event on Friday. This ban goes into effect at 5 p. m., as “city snowplows are already out clearing roads.”

Highways Jammed Up on Friday
On Friday, several accidents occurred on snowy roads across southern Ontario, prompting police to close highways and advise drivers to reduce their speed. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported numerous accidents that either shut down highways or severely slowed traffic including: Eastbound Hwy. 401 from Guelph Line to Milton. Westbound Hwy. 401 from Cedar Creek Road near Cambridge to Woodstock was closed around 12:15 p. m., “due to multiple collisions and poor weather and road conditions.”Westbound Hwy. 403 in Norwich Township. Eastbound Hwy. 402 at Wonderland Road S. in London was closed from 11 a. m. until about noon due to “a multi-vehicle collision and bad road conditions.”Perth Line 20 between Perth Road 164 and Perth Road 163 is blocked because of a vehicle stuck due to poor road conditions. Hwy. 8 in West Perth due to an accident. “The winter weather’s back and so are the collisions,” OPP Sgt.
