The provincial government is announcing an $80 million funding boost for the University of Waterloo to create over 2,500 additional seats in high-demand areas.
A total of 2,515 new seats will be available in STEM, health, and other programs aligned with labor market needs.
This investment is part of a larger initiative totaling $1.7 billion aimed at adding 70,000 new spots across the post-secondary education system.
It’s being described as the largest expansion of its kind in Ontario in more than ten years, responding to economic challenges such as the U. S. trade war.
Dr. Bill Rosehart, President and Vice-Chancellor of UW, has expressed support for this funding.
“At Waterloo, students learn both in the classroom and through real-world experiences,” said Rosehart in a release. “By expanding access to these experiences, we can help more students turn their ideas and education into meaningful careers while developing the talented graduates Ontario needs for the future.”
The province states it assessed funding proposals based on student interest, industry requirements, and institutional capabilities.
