Thunderstorms and rain are predicted to ramp up Thursday afternoon in the Waterloo area, with a chance of a “brief tornado,” according to Environment Canada.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail,” the yellow severe thunderstorm watch statement says, adding, “Once the storms have intensified there is a risk of a brief tornado.”
Power outages could happen along with hail about the size of a toonie and wind gusts reaching up to 90 km/h.
“Be prepared for severe weather. If threatening weather approaches, take cover in a basement or interior room. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. Secure loose objects,” the statement says.
Storms are expected Thursday afternoon into the evening.
