Labour Day is a yearly celebration that honors workers and their invaluable contributions to society.

This Monday, thousands of workers took to the streets of downtown Hamilton to celebrate, expressing that this year’s Labour Day carries special significance.

The ongoing trade war has left many Canadian workers feeling uncertain about their job security, especially as the cost of living continues to climb.

Waving flags and demonstrating unity, thousands marched through downtown Hamilton alongside their union brothers and sisters.

Many participants emphasized that the event showcased their collective strength as they joined together in solidarity.

The annual Labour Day Parade is put together by the Hamilton and District Labour Council.

The council’s president, Anthony Marco, mentioned that this year’s parade focuses on unity against government spending cuts and services while addressing the looming American tariffs.

“If an individual was pissed off about tariffs, there’s not a lot they can do other than write a letter to somebody, but as the labour movement, it’s our responsibility to stand up for working class people, even those who are not unionized and making sure that they are going to be impacted as least as possible when it comes to some of this stuff,” said Marco. “We’re sharing these things, like health and safety is an issue, pensions are an issue, working conditions are an issue for everybody, and when we understand those common struggles, it’s a lot easier to try and deal with them.”

A few workers at Monday’s parade are facing these challenges firsthand; among them are developmental service workers from Community Living Oakville who have been on strike for over three months.

<p“ This is what we all do; we all are labour workers. We labor for this country; we expect respect back in return… come to the table,” said Beverly Powell-Harvey from OPSEU Local 249.

A large parade also took place in Toronto where union leaders urged government officials at all levels to safeguard workers during tough times.
“Ontario runs because workers are out there doing the job,” said Yolanda Mc Clean, president of CUPE Ontario. “Canada runs because workers are out there doing the job.”

“The way to beat tariffs and the tariff war is not a bunch of announcements; it’s a real true plan with real solutions that are going to work for all workers in Ontario,” said Laura Walton, president of the Ontario Federation of Labour. “And I’m calling on Ford and all politicians in Ontario to make sure that happens.”

This Labour Day arrives with 1,200 employees at National Steel Car currently on strike without any resolution-another industry heavily impacted by the ongoing trade conflict.
