WASAGA BEACH, ON – Today, the Town of Wasaga Beach introduced its Destination Wasaga Master Plan-an exciting, community-driven initiative aimed at turning one of Ontario’s favorite summer spots into a lively, sustainable, and well-known year-round destination for recreation and nature.
This plan has been developed with support from the Government of Ontario and outlines a long-term vision for the beachfront, downtown area, public spaces, transport links, attractions, and experiences for visitors in Wasaga Beach.
Destination Wasaga is shaped by several important commitments:
The beach will always be open to the public, ensuring access is protected for both locals and tourists. Wasaga Beach will stay focused on community first; a place where people enjoy living is also one that attracts visitors. Environmental care and genuine Indigenous involvement will play key roles in shaping projects to protect the beach, dunes, shoreline, delicate habitats and natural systems while incorporating Indigenous knowledge and culture into various initiatives. Tourism growth will be handled thoughtfully, with an emphasis on encouraging longer stays, year-round visits and maximizing economic benefits from existing visitors to Wasaga Beach. Implementation will occur in phases with accountability; each project will undergo necessary planning, environmental assessments, regulatory checks, and financial approvals.
The Destination Wasaga Master Plan aims to draw strategic investments, bolster local businesses and jobs, enhance the Town’s commercial tax base while increasing year-round economic activity throughout Wasaga Beach and the South Georgian Bay area. Significant private-sector investment is already underway with plans for a premium Marriott-branded hotel.
The focus is initially on getting more value from the millions of guests who visit Wasaga Beach every year-promoting longer stays alongside year-round tourism while benefiting local businesses and improving residents’ quality of life along with environmental care.
Among the ideas included in the Master Plan are revitalizing Dardanella-a key historical landmark in Wasaga Beach-into a modern venue for performances all year round. There’s also a proposal for an iconic pedestrian bridge over the Nottawasaga River that would connect both ends of the world’s longest freshwater beach like never before.
“Great communities do not stand still-they make deliberate choices about the future they want to build,” added Mayor Smith. “Destination Wasaga is our community’s bold vision. With ongoing support from the Province of Ontario, the Government of Canada, and our other partners, we’re ready to bring that vision to life.”
