Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the deaths of two people who drowned in separate incidents on Saturday, one of whom was a three-year-old child.

Officials stated that emergency services were called to Mille Roches Beach, located about 15 kilometres west of Cornwall, Ont., at approximately 5:45 p. m. for a child who was unresponsive.

Off-duty medical professionals attempted to revive the child before they were taken to the hospital, where they were unfortunately pronounced dead.

The child’s name is being kept private out of respect for the family.

In another incident, police reported that emergency responders went to a residence on River Road East in Wasaga Beach around 1:05 p. m. after receiving reports of a missing kayaker.

A 24-year-old man from Toronto had been kayaking with two others when their kayak overturned.

The Wasaga Beach Fire Department located the man and began resuscitation efforts before he was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Provincial police have been stressing drowning prevention as this year’s drowning statistics in eastern Ontario have more than doubled compared to last year at this time.

Just last week, another three-year-old child drowned at Sandbanks Provincial Park while playing in shallow waters with family members.
