Health authorities have confirmed two current cases of measles, with potential exposure at several restaurants in Newmarket and Vaughan, including Fortino’s Woodbridge and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.

York Region Public Health is informing the public about four sites where people may have been exposed to measles related to these confirmed cases in York Region while they were contagious.

If you visited any of these places on the specified dates and times, you might have been exposed to measles:

Please take note:

&#0A If you develop symptoms like fever or rash,
it is important that you do not attend work or school. Call your healthcare provider beforehand.
They need to know you could be infected so they can take precautions.

Symptoms may appear between seven and twenty-one days after being exposed:

    – High fever accompanied by cough or runny nose.
    – Red watery eyes similar to pink eye.
    – A red rash that usually starts at the head/neck area before spreading downwards.
Typically non-itchy rash appears three to seven days after other symptoms begin.

*NOTE: Anyone who thinks they might’ve been exposed at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital’s Emergency Department Waiting Room should check if they’ve had two doses of the measles vaccine. If you were there with an infant under six months old or are immunocompromised, please contact York Region Public Health immediately for possible preventive treatment.

York Region Public Health recommends anyone who suspects they might’ve been exposed follow these steps:

Visit york. ca/Measles Reporting to fill out a short contact follow-up survey. This helps them assess your risk (or those with you) and prioritize contacts at greater risk of infection. Confirm that you and your family members received two doses of the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV). Those born before 1970 likely experienced measles as children and are protected. Vaccinations are among the safest ways to safeguard yourself, your kids, and your community from serious diseases preventable by vaccines. If symptoms develop, stay home! Don’t go into work or school! Call your healthcare provider before visiting them so they’re aware that it could be measles requiring special precautions! You can also reach out to York Region Public Health anytime at 1-877-464-9675 ext. 77280. If you went to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital’s Emergency Department on Monday May 12th , you’ll be contacted directly by York Region Public Health if you’re eligible for a post-exposure vaccination clinic.

Measles is a very contagious viral illness that spreads easily through airborne particles. The virus can survive in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours. Infants under one year old, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems face higher risks for severe complications such as encephalitis (brain inflammation) and even death.

The signs of measles show up between seven and twenty-one days after exposure and can include:

High fever along with cough or runny nose Red eyes that are watery like conjunctivitis Red rashes starting on the head then moving downward towards chest arms legs not typically itchy appearing three to seven days following initial symptoms

You can get more details regarding measles at york. ca/Measles.
