A 46-year-old man who lost his life in a Vaughan home invasion over the weekend is being honored as “a hero” and an “honest, God-fearing man who absolutely loved his community,” according to his brother.
York Regional Police confirmed on Wednesday that Abdul Aleem Farooqi died from gunshot wounds after at least three male suspects broke into his home around 1 a. m. on Sunday.
Naeem, Farooqi’s brother, spoke during a news conference alongside Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca, expressing hope for systemic changes that would spare other families from what they are enduring.
“My brother died as he lived. He was a hero,” said Naeem. “He woke up and he did what any father would do: try to protect his family. I don’t know what he could have done differently.”
During a news conference providing updates on several recent violent incidents in York Region, Insp. Paolo Fiore stated that three suspects entered through the back door of the residence.
“When Farooqi confronted them, he was fatally shot,” he said.

According to police reports, the suspects stole cellphones from three family members; two of which were found nearby and collected by law enforcement before fleeing in a dark-colored SUV.

Police Chief’s Advice Differs from Premier’s Stance
Chief Jim Mac Sween urged individuals not to confront criminals during a home invasion “unless absolutely necessary,” recommending they do everything possible to stay safe until help arrives. This advice contrasts with comments made by Premier Doug Ford earlier this week. ‘I have a saying for those defending their homes: ‘I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by six,’” Ford remarked during a news conference Tuesday. “And unfortunately, my friend Aleem is going to be carried by six because he’s trying to defend his family.” When asked about Ford’s remarks, Mac Sween stated he had no concerns but reiterated it wasn’t what York police recommend. ‘The premier can make his own statement and form his own opinion about that,’ he said. ‘As it stands, we know the best defense for most people is compliance.’ Mac Sween described Farooqi as a devout Muslim Canadian “who was loved by his family and a respected leader in his community.” Investigators revealed he ran a furnace and duct cleaning business based in Mississauga.Police mentioned they’re also looking into another home invasion occurring less than one kilometer away from Farooqi’s residence on the same night while investigating any potential connections between these events.
