From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Trump administration is taking its time renewing applications for a longstanding immigration program that lets people brought into the U. S. illegally as children stay in the country, leading them to lose jobs and face deportation risks.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program from Obama has allowed hundreds of thousands of recipients to remain in America and work legally while staying here on a two-year renewable basis.

Now, actions by the Trump administration aimed at limiting parts of this program have jeopardized the lives and careers of those who depend on DACA.

“You feel like a dog on the corner waiting for somebody to feed them,” DACA recipient Victor Jardon-Reyes, 33, told the Chicago Tribune.

Jardon-Reyes lost his job in airline repair near Chicago last month while he was waiting for renewal paperwork submitted back in November.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, USCIS is ensuring safety by more thoroughly screening and vetting all aliens, which can lead to longer processing times,” Matthew J. Tragesser, a spokesperson for U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, told The Independent in a statement.

“DACA does not grant any legal status in this country. Illegal aliens claiming DACA status are not automatically protected from deportation,” he said.

Advocates nationwide report similar delays.

“Previously, you would get a response within a month [or] two months at most; now we’re seeing three or four months,” said Mario Gonzalez, executive director at Fresno’s Education & Leadership Foundation and DACA recipient during an interview with KFSN earlier this month.

As of last June, around 516,000 individuals were enrolled in DACA according to Migration Policy Institute data; Texas, Illinois, and California hold most participants.

President Donald Trump has long aimed at ending DACA unsuccessfully during his first term while also undermining it through various means during his second term.

In just over a year’s time, DHS arrested over 260 individuals under DACA guidelines. Between 86 and 174 have been removed from America according to agency statements that have sparked outrage among Democrat lawmakers due to inconsistencies regarding figures reported.

Congressional Democrats argue that these arrests are unlawful.

“We all know these facts: DACA beneficiaries are people who faced challenges but came forward trusting that their government would act fairly,” stated Congressional Hispanic Caucus this month. “They followed rules knowing full well what was at stake. Is this how Donald Trump and Kristi Noem reward honesty and bravery?”</pp

A 42-year-old individual under DACA is suing against Trump’s actions alleging she was deported just one day after attending her green card appointment leaving her stuck in Mexico now.

“I built my life in Sacramento; I raised my daughter there while working hard under DACA,” Maria de Jesus Estrada Juarez stated sharing her experience with The Independent as she mentioned having supported her family through years living there.

“I adhered strictly following procedures thinking I took significant steps towards stability,” she added noting instead being separated overnight from her daughter forced outside USA borders.

“All I desire right now simply returns home reuniting again alongside family we’ve established together.”</pp
