Dan J Sullivan is a retired schoolteacher and US Forest Service employee living in Petersburg, a town in southeastern Alaska. He’s running as a Republican for the US Senate. Dan S Sullivan is the current Republican US senator who has represented Alaska since 2015.
Both candidates will be on the ballot, one right after the other, when Alaskans head to the polls for primary elections this week – a confusing twist that has drawn complaints from Republicans.
However, political observers say that the real challenge for the incumbent senator comes from Mary Peltola, a Democrat who has successfully been elected twice to represent Alaska in the US House of Representatives. She is now aiming to beat him in November’s midterm elections for the Senate. The primary vote on Tuesday will determine which four candidates will move on to compete in November’s general election.
Even though no Democrat has won a US Senate seat from Alaska since 2008, the party feels Peltola could be the candidate to change that. If she wins, it would give Democrats a significant boost towards regaining control of Congress during Donald Trump’s final two years in office.
“The reason Mary Peltola has a chance is not because, necessarily, Democrats are surging in Alaska,” said Scott Kendall, an election law attorney who has worked for both parties’ candidates including Senator Sullivan. “It’s that Mary Peltola, you know, she’s very pro-oil and gas development. She understands issues important to Alaskans’ finances, and that makes her just a bit of a unicorn.”
Being the largest state but geographically distant from the lower 48 states gives Alaska unique political dynamics. With an economy heavily reliant on oil and gas production, Democrats here often support expanding production unlike their counterparts elsewhere who focus on fossil fuels’ impact on climate change.
While Alaska has only voted for one Democrat in presidential elections – Lyndon B Johnson back in 1964 – power between both parties shifts at state level frequently. Currently bipartisan coalitions govern both houses of legislature. Independents account for about two-thirds of registered voters while Republicans make up around 23%, with fewer than 12% identifying as Democrats.
Sullivan was elected in 2014 after defeating first-term Democratic senator Mark Begich and he has consistently voted along party lines during his two terms-much more so than Lisa Murkowski, Alaska’s senior Republican senator known nationally for often going against Trump.
Peltola broke through Republican dominance in Alaska’s federal representation back in 2022 when Don Young passed away unexpectedly; he had served as representative since 1973. She won special election to finish his term becoming first-ever Alaska Native member of Congress and secured full term later that year but lost her re-election bid narrowly against Republican Nick Begich III in 2024.

Alaska supported Trump by over 13 percentage points that year yet Peltola is seen as Democrats’ best hope for winning this Senate race among several red states they’re targeting to regain majority control.
Hoping to show she can effectively represent Alaskans’ interests Washington D. C., Peltola focuses her campaign around moderate politics highlighting her slogan “fish, family, freedom”. This emphasizes fishing’s cultural significance especially within native communities which form an influential voting block-and also addresses issues like bycatch where trawlers unintentionally catch valuable species hurting sport and commercial fishermen alike.
