HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) – The recent sexual assault allegations against Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for Maine’s U. S. Senate seat, have shed light on the current state of American politics.

A former girlfriend has accused Platner, who previously faced accusations of infidelity and aggressive behavior, of raping her during a drunken visit to her home in 2021. Following these claims, many potential Democratic allies have withdrawn their endorsements despite earlier controversies involving offensive social media posts and even a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery.

Senator Ruben Gallego, the Arizona Democrat, retracted his support just hours after Politico broke the news, describing the allegations as “troubling” and “deeply serious.” His Republican counterpart from Utah, Mike Lee, took the opportunity to make a jab at him before day’s end.

“I never endorsed Graham Platner,” Lee commented on Gallego’s post on X.

This MAGA supporter had backed President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign; Trump was found by courts to have sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll back in the ’90s.

“Might want to sit this one out,” Gallego replied, alluding to the New York City jury’s decision regarding Trump.

The president continues to deny Carroll’s allegations.

In recent years, Washington politics have taken a dark turn as toxic norms have become more prevalent within two of the three branches of government. The GOP’s refusal to rein in Trump’s most unethical actions has allowed him significant freedom to act on his impulses while Democrats take notes for when they might face similar challenges.

The reaction from Platner’s party members regarding his sexual assault allegations offers a glimmer of hope that political standards could potentially improve moving forward.
