The US government has granted Anthropic the green light to restart access to Mythos 5 for “a group of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure,” the company announced on X. Although Anthropic didn’t specify how many organizations will regain access, Semafor reported that over 100 institutions in the US, including major corporations and government entities, are set to benefit from this decision.

Anthropic stated that it’s moving quickly to redeploy Mythos 5 while continuing discussions with the government to broaden access even more. The company is also negotiating with officials about reinstating Fable 5, although no timeline was provided for that process.

If you remember, Anthropic had blocked all customer access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 on June 12. At that time, the company explained that the government required them to suspend access for all foreign nationals, even those within the US working at Anthropic. This directive came after Amazon and other companies warned that these models could be exploited by malicious actors. Authorities were particularly concerned about a group linked to China gaining access to Mythos 5.

According to Semafor, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter informing Anthropic of his decision. “I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model,” he reportedly wrote. “Anthropic has committed to work with the US government on protocols and standards and releases” for its models, he added. Lutnick’s letter also indicated that daily talks between Anthropic and government officials over the past two weeks helped lift the block.

Since June 12, we’ve been working closely with the US government to restore access to Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical..
