Can the US keep pace with rising political tensions, economic shifts, and changing demographics?

[VIDOR, Texas] A brief detour for a cheaper hotel while driving from Houston to Philadelphia took me to a “sundown town.”

That phrase might conjure images of sunsets and beach vibes in a tourist spot. But I quickly learned that this label carried a darker meaning.

As I stood at the front desk waiting for my room keys, I casually asked – what’s this place like?

The young receptionist, her blonde ponytail pulled back neatly, fell silent. “Well, it doesn’t have the best history for black and brown people,” she finally said after a moment.

“They say it was a sundown town. But I’ve lived here for two years, and it’s all fine now,” she added hastily. “It has a reputation – I’m not sure it’s deserved.”

That was my sudden introduction to Vidor, known for decades as the “most hate-filled town in Texas.” Intrigued to learn more, I looked up local news stories. Only a few crime reports appeared online, none recent enough to stand out. And nothing struck me during an evening drive through the town; just simple low-rise homes, small shops, and fast food places.

A sign that bluntly stated “whites only within city limits after dark” was supposedly taken down from Vidor sometime in the 1970s or 1980s. Some black drivers have shared on social media that they grew up hearing warnings about avoiding Vidor and still wouldn’t stop there for food or gas.

A database managed by an educational site run by Tougaloo College, a historically black college in Mississippi, notes that sundown towns numbered in the thousands across the US from the late 19th century until around mid-century.

It wasn’t just black people who were excluded. Jews, Hispanics, Native Americans, Mormons and Asian Americans also faced rejection during that time. The “Delta Chinese,” brought in to work on cotton farms in Mississippi endured decades of segregation.

Residents and officials of Vidor insist things are much different now. They feel it’s unfair to label their town negatively in 2026. The last major incident occurred in the early 1990s when a federal judge ordered desegregation of public housing; four black families moved there but left due to ongoing hostility from white supremacist groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
