New Trade Agreement Between Ontario and Utah

Ontario has made a deal with Utah aimed at enhancing trade as part of Premier Doug Ford’s initiative to strengthen economic relationships with individual states in America.

Ford signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Utah Governor Spencer Cox on Monday, according to a news release from the premier’s office.

This agreement will allow Ontario and Utah to expand trade in several sectors.

“Canada and the United States are always stronger when we work together to increase cooperation, collaboration and trade so we can grow the economy on both sides of the border,” Ford said in the release.

“With nearly $7 billion in annual trade between Ontario and Utah already, today’s agreement will help deliver new opportunities for our province’s world-class workers and companies and create lasting prosperity in both regions.”

The Canada-U. S.-Mexico Agreement on trade is set for review on July 1 following an 18-month trade dispute triggered by U. S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Ontario Aims for Closer Collaboration with Utah

Alongside Utah, Ontario has secured economic cooperation agreements with nine other U. S. states since 2023. These include Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

“The new MOU is part of the government’s ongoing plan to make Ontario the most resilient and competitive economy in the G7 by strengthening ties and establishing new relationships with governments at federal, state and local levels as well as business leaders across the United States,” stated the release.

The release also mentions that Ontario possesses expertise in clean, affordable nuclear energy including large-scale reactors, small modular reactors and energy storage solutions. This knowledge can be shared with states aiming to meet increasing electricity demands while ensuring their energy security.

The announcement indicated that Ontario and Utah will enhance “strategic collaboration” in areas like critical minerals, defense manufacturing and artificial intelligence through academic partnerships, regulatory cooperation, workforce development initiatives and trade missions.

Cox expressed gratitude towards his partnership with Ford stating that they share a commitment towards building a prosperous future together.

“Utah and Ontario share a strong commitment to building and powering the future,” Fox said in the release. “This agreement strengthens an already important trade relationship and supports good jobs on both sides of the border.”

The premier’s office highlighted that Ontario maintains a close trading connection with Utah, estimating total trade between them at nearly $7 billion (CAD) in 2025. This figure represents about 70 percent of Canada’s overall trade with Utah according to their office.
