This offseason, one of the main topics surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs is what will happen with longtime defenseman Morgan Rielly. He’s still part of the team for now, but he’s been at the center of many trade discussions.

The Maple Leafs have made some significant shifts within their organization recently, affecting everything from player rosters to management and coaching staff. There’s a strong possibility that Rielly could be leaving the place he has called home since being drafted in the first round back in 2012.

At this moment, no trade has occurred involving the experienced defenseman. However, according to a well-known NHL Insider, it seems like it’s just a matter of time before that changes.

Chris Johnston Thinks A Trade For Morgan Rielly Is Coming Soon

NHL Insider Chris Johnston believes it’s only a matter of time until the Maple Leafs decide to trade Rielly.

“I continue to hear that the expectation is he’ll still be moved before next season,” Johnston mentioned earlier this month.

Johnston also clarified that previous claims suggesting Rielly had provided a list of teams he’d agree to join were not accurate.

“Sources say Morgan Rielly hasn’t green-lighted a trade by waiving his NMC at this point in time. Any reports to the contrary are false,” Johnston stated.

Maple Leafs GM John Chayka Believes In Morgan Rielly

<p. Maple Leafs GM John Chayka, who has led key moves since taking over from Brad Treliving, described Rielly as a “good” defenseman known for his leadership qualities.

“With regards to Morgan, we’re talking about a really good defenceman,” said Chayka. “For us, where we’re at and where we’re trying to go, he’s been a leader-the longest-tenured Leaf-and I have nothing but total respect for him. But again, we’ll continue looking to improve our group and consider everything; however, I’d say at this juncture that Morgan’s a big part of this.”

Chayka also mentioned that there have been talks with Rielly’s camp about possible changes but nothing is finalized yet.

“We’re going to continue exploring some things,” he noted. “We had some discussions around the draft and free agency; however, these matters are complicated.”

“It’s hard to forecast exactly what could unfold; certainly, we believe our lineup has solid stability now. If we can bring in difference-makers, I think we should always aim for that. It does feel like there might be more opportunities in July and August months.”

Rielly is entering his 13th season with the Maple Leafs after posting 11 goals and 25 assists last year for a total of 36 points. He averaged 21:08 minutes on ice per game while finishing with a minus-18 rating.</pp

He has been part of the Maple Leafs organization for over ten years now and has experienced both triumphs and setbacks throughout multiple early playoff exits.
