A person has died after a canoe flipped over near Georgian Bay township on Saturday night, according to provincial police.
Officers arrived at Stewart Lake shortly after 8 p. m., as reported by the Ontario Provincial Police in a news release on Sunday.
Two individuals were canoeing when their boat capsized about 40 feet from the shore, provincial police stated.
One person was saved by a nearby boater, but the other went underwater and did not come back up, according to provincial police.
The OPP’s underwater search and recovery team collaborated with Muskoka Lakes Fire and other emergency teams to search for the missing individual. On Sunday, they discovered the body of a 31-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., as confirmed by provincial police.
In Sunday’s announcement, the OPP urged boaters and paddlers to prioritize water safety by wearing life jackets or personal flotation devices, checking weather conditions before going out on the water, and ensuring that all necessary safety gear is easily accessible.
The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone who has information is asked to reach out to the police.
