America 250: Bobby Jones

Bobby Jones was born on March 17, 1902, in Atlanta, Georgia, and became one of the greatest amateur golfers in history. As a teenager, he reached the third round of the U. S. Former PGA Tour player Matt Mc Quillan has died at 45 years old.

The Canadian from Kingston, Ontario, passed away on Aug. 5 “surrounded by his family,” according to an obituary in the Kingston Whig-Standard newspaper.

Mc Quillan received a scholarship to play college golf at Oklahoma State, starting his college journey in 2000 before transferring to the University of Georgia. He turned professional in 2003 and played in a total of 32 PGA Tour events, making the cut in nine of those competitions.

Mc Quillan’s best performance on Tour was in 2011 when he finished T-3 at the John Deere Classic after an impressive final round score of 64. He tied for third with two-time major champion Zach Johnson.

His last appearance in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event took place on the PGA Tour Canada circuit back in September 2016.

“Matty was a respected golfer, devoted son, hilarious brother and friend. His father Mark started teaching him how to swing a club when he was just ten years old and his passion and talent grew immensely,” reads his obituary from Whig-Standard.

“Starting as a junior on the Canadian Tour and making it to the PGA in 2011 , Matt developed lifelong friendships while mentoring anyone who loved golf. There will be a celebration of life held at ANAF later; details will be announced by family. He’ll be missed deeply by many and we’ll remember his spirit and kindness every day. Rest easy Matty; we love you.”

Mc Quillan earned just under $604,000 throughout his career on tour.
