The Tillsonburg Kinsmen Club has gathered some essential funds to support the Helping Hand Food Bank and a Home Comfort Meal Program provided by Marcel Rosehart and Chrissy’s Catering.
Through their Food For Friends initiative, the club raised over $13,000, with a significant $5,000 donation on June 13 marking the last day to contribute.
“I’m thrilled, these guys are terrific,” said Joan Clarkson, co-ordinator of the Helping Hand Food Bank. “This whole community has stepped right up and given us so much.”
Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the food bank has had to adjust how it collects donations. Donated food must now be quarantined for a certain period.
This approach works for some contributions; however, major food drives – especially the annual fall blitz that gathers thousands of pounds – will pose challenges this year.
“We don’t know if we’ll be able to hold the food drive this year,” remarked Brenda Fitzgerald, interim co-ordinator for Helping Hand.
“We lack the space to quarantine what we usually receive from the fall food drive,” added Clarkson, noting they are exploring all possibilities.

Shane Curtis, president of the Tillsonburg Kinsmen Club, mentioned their original goal was set at $10,000. The amount was reached in under a week.
The club donated $7,000 to Helping Hand Food Bank and $3,000 towards the senior meals program. According to Curtis, this funding is expected to cover 300 meals.
Marcel Rosehart from Chrissy’s Catering provides home comfort meals at $10 each; thus the Kinsmen wanted part of their Food For Friends funds directed toward meals for vulnerable seniors.
A small subcommittee from Kinsmen consisting of Curtis (President), Cedric Tomico, Dave Martin and John Danbrook along with Dave Klosler and Scot Bolton was formed.
Curtis stated they prefer cash donations right now.
“We wanted to provide food for those in need but after speaking with the food bank about it; traditional food drive methods came with too many risks due to contact,” explained Curtis.
