Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital is launching a COVID-19 assessment centre on Wednesday to assist Southwestern public health in following the province’s recent call for increased testing.

This new facility will be the third assessment centre in the Southwestern public health region, joining Woodstock Hospital, which opened its doors on April 2, and St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital.

The centre will operate from 8 a. m. to 4 p. m., Monday to Friday. It is located at 17 Bear St., just a short distance from the hospital.

“To support this initiative and ensure we have enough capacity for more testing, we’ve decided that the Tillsonburg assessment centre should open right away,” Sandy Jansen, President and CEO of the Tillsonburg and Ingersoll hospitals, stated.

The Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital assessment centre requests that individuals book an appointment before arriving.

This centre will provide services for residents of Tillsonburg and nearby communities.

Before this new assessment centre opened, residents could only get tested for COVID-19 at Woodstock Hospital’s assessment centre, certain family physician offices, or at the emergency department of Tillsonburg hospital.

Recently, Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged for more COVID-19 testing to take place.

The Ministry of Health has broadened its guidelines regarding who can be tested. Testing is now available to anyone showing at least one symptom of COVID-19, even if it’s mild. Individuals who think they might have been exposed to COVID-19 or are at risk through their work can also get tested.

No referral is needed for the Tillsonburg assessment centre; however, officials encourage people to make an appointment beforehand.

“Scheduling an appointment will help our team prepare for your visit, reduce delays and avoid long wait times,” Jodi Edwards, director of clinical services at the Tillsonburg hospital, explained. Each visit should take less than 15 minutes.

To schedule an appointment, people can call: 1-855-905-6148.
