Frances Marie Barr (nee Sharp) passed away on October 20, 2023 at Caressant Care in Courtland. She was 88 and leaves behind a brother, Wayne Sharp, and two sons, Stephen and Kevin.
Frances was the loving wife of Earle William Barr, who died in Tillsonburg in 2022, also at the age of 88. They shared an incredible marriage of 68 years, rarely apart except for their final years. They complemented each other beautifully, sharing interests and spending most of their time together.
Earle was always active as an artist, and Frances joined him in that passion during their early retirement years in Muskoka. As both professional photographers, they built a gallery onto their home in Port Carling – Panglossian Acres – becoming well-known figures in the local arts community. This continued when they moved to Tillsonburg with regular exhibitions at Station Arts and various regional galleries (A selection of Earle’s work is permanently displayed in Woodstock Hospital’s main lobby).
But their interests extended beyond art. During the 70s and 80s while living in Scarborough, they enjoyed modern square dancing and its social scene. They earned a reputation as a couple who could really dance and often traveled to events around the area.
Frances and Earle had a deep appreciation for nature, beauty, and craftsmanship. Their home was filled with wonderful touches that were always artistic and thoughtful. Yet it was Frances who truly made it feel like home. She was engaging, fun to talk to, steady under pressure-both a parent and a friend. Her resilience shone through brightly.
Even during her later years after suffering two strokes that limited her mobility, her spirit remained unbroken.
Mom was a warm-hearted mother and an ideal partner; she set a high standard for all of us as human beings. All the Barr men were fortunate to have her around. She truly represented the best of us. Her absence will be deeply felt by her sons.
