The best female high school basketball players from Oxford County will take the court this Thursday as Woodstock Collegiate Institute hosts the yearly Captains/Veterans All-Star game.
This event showcases 18 senior players and eight junior players from five schools in the TVRA East Division.
The city team includes athletes from Woodstock Collegiate, College Avenue, and Huron Park, while the county team features players from Lord Dorchester and Glendale.

This game was established in 1983 by Bill Gillespie, a coach, teacher, long-time basketball official, and community volunteer. Gillespie passed away on March 11, 2016, at the age of 71 due to cancer.
A member of the Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame, Gillespie coached basketball at Huron Park secondary school. He also played varsity basketball at Waterloo Lutheran University, which is now Wilfrid Laurier University, along with competing with the Woodstock Kings in local leagues and playing overseas in the World Masters Games.
Initially designed as a senior basketball game for students in grades 11 to 13 when it started in 1983, a junior game was added later on. In 1998, after Gillespie’s retirement, the Oxford Basketball Referees Association began hosting it. Over eight years with them, the game moved between different high schools until Huron Park took over hosting duties in 2006. A few years later, Woodstock Collegiate became the main host for girls’ teams in fall and boys’ teams in spring.
Players are chosen by each school’s coaching staff based on their skills, commitment to the sport, leadership abilities both on and off the court.
Admission costs $5 for adults, $3 for students; kids under ten can attend for free.
All proceeds will go towards Woodstock Collegiate’s Festive Campaign.
