Canada Day 2026: What’s Open and Closed in Northeastern Ontario

Canada Day 2026: What’s Open and Closed in Northeastern Ontario

This year, Canada Day lands on a Wednesday, and although there might be some rain across northeastern Ontario, communities are gearing up for a day filled with fun activities.

Here’s what’s going on in Sudbury, Timmins, North Bay, and Sault Ste. Marie, plus details on what will be open and closed.

Sudbury

Where to celebrate:

The main celebration in the city will happen at Bell Park starting at noon. It’ll feature live music, family-friendly activities, vendors, and fireworks lighting up Ramsey Lake to wrap up the night.

Science North is also joining the festivities with half-price general admission starting at 10 a. m. Events kick off at 1 p. m. and will include live entertainment, local food trucks, an evening market, interactive science shows, and a synchronized drone show featuring 300 drones at 10 p. m.

Traffic and transit:

After the drone show and fireworks end, Paris Street will be closed from Boland Avenue to Centennial Drive starting at 9:30 p. m. Sudbury police officers will be there to guide detours.

Roads around Bell Park, Science North, Health Sciences North, and nearby streets will be monitored by police throughout the day and night to prevent illegal parking.

You can still access Health Sciences North and Ramsey Lake Road via Paris Crescent during the street closure in the evening.

GOVA Transit will provide shuttle service between Southridge Mall, downtown transit depot, and Science North every 30 minutes from 11:45 a. m. until 9:45 p. m. The fare is $1 per person for a round trip.

What’s open:

Shoppers Drug Mart (hours vary)Beer Store locations on Lorne Street and Lasalle Boulevard (11:00 a. m. to 6:00 p. m.)Recycling centre and drop-off depot Landfills and transfer sites

What’s closed:

Service Canada Service Ontario Retail stores including department stores like Walmart New Sudbury Centre Elm and Beech Centre Chris’ Independent Grocery Store All LCBO locations Beer Store’s Paris Street and Main Street locations

Garbage collection scheduled for Wednesday will instead take place on Saturday.

Timmins

Where to celebrate:

The fun starts at Hollinger Park at 2 p. m., with live music kicking off at 4 p. m., along with food vendors, inflatables for kids, and other family activities. The splash pad will also be available for use.

You can catch fireworks beginning at 9:45 p. m. over Gillies Lake Conservation Area.>

Please note that the Hollinger Park parking lot off Highway 655 will close from June 30 through July 1 due to fireworks setup. Free parking options are available in municipal lots across the city including Spruce N. Lot, Algonquin Lot, Third Ave. Lot, Pine S. Lot, Library Lot , and Coalition Lot (Timmins Transit).>

The garbage collection has been pushed back until Thursday.>

North Bay

Celebreating:>

The waterfront of North Bay once again hosts celebrations for Canada Day complete with fireworks over Lake Nipissing.

You can enjoy free admission all day long to both the Dionne Quints Home as well as the North Bay Museum.

What’s closed:Beer Store on Lakeshore Drive North Bay Transit LCBO Most grocery stores Government offices Major financial institutions City Hall Waste Diversion Facility Merrick landfillThere won’t be any garbage or recycling pickup today so curbside schedules are getting adjusted.

Sault Ste. Marie

Where to celebrate:Festivities start up around 2 :00 pm at Roberta Bondar Pavilion , offering live entertainment , games , plus fireworks above St Marys River when dusk arrives. The Poutine Feast takes place too at Downtown Plaza running from 11 :00 am until 9 :00 pm.

What’s open:Bellevue Marina(9 :00 am-9 :00 pm)Bondar Marine(9 :00 am-9 :00 pm)John Rhodes pool offers parent & child/lane swim from 11 :15 am-1 ;00 pm followed by public swimming from 1 :15pm-4 :0pm. V. E. Greco Pool(weather permitting)Bellevue Park Splash Pad Manzo Splash Pad Shoppers Drug Mart(hours vary)Most restaurants

What’s closed:Cemetery office City Landfill Household Hazardous Waste Depot Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site Fire Services Administrative office GFL Memorial Gardens office& Box Office Northern Community Centre arena Bay Street Active Living Centre Public Libraries Public Works office(for24-hour emergency service call705 -759 -5201 )Ronald A Irwin Civic Centre Sault Transit main officeRegular transit services won’t run but Parabus operations continue. Garbage, recycling, and leaf/yard waste collections planned for Wednesday have moved into Thursday.
