Police offer $25K reward for info on the casino guard’s killer. Suspect Tyjae Nosworthy-Smith has been on the run since Oct. 2023. Ferdinand’s wife appeals for community help in tracking down suspect.

Authorities are still searching for the person responsible for the killing of a security guard at Ontario’s Pickering Casino Resort in 2023.

Michael Ferdinand, aged 34, was fatally shot while on duty at the casino during the early hours of October 9, 2023. He had only been working there for seven months prior to his death.

The suspect was named by investigators on November 7 that same year as Tyjae Nosworthy-Smith and has been evading capture ever since.

During a press conference held by Durham Regional Police on Monday, it was announced that a $25K reward is now available for any information that leads to the arrest of the suspect who also goes by the rapper name Baby2 and has shared music online while remaining at large.

“Get counsel. Turn yourself in,” Det.-Sgt. Erik Mamers stated. “There’s a Canada-wide warrant out for his arrest regarding second-degree murder charges and he’s considered armed and dangerous.”

‘Behind the Timeline’

Nosworthy-Smith is described as a Black male standing about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing around 110 pounds with a tattoo located on his left elbow. Police believe he may have connections to communities in Driftwood as well as Jane and Finch areas and Brampton.

A photo of Nosworthy-Smith was briefly released during the news conference. According to Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act, suspects under age eighteen cannot be legally identified without court permission; thus this image can only be distributed by police for five days.

Mamers mentioned that law enforcement is aware of videos being posted online by the suspect since the incident occurred and that they are “taking steps with judicial authorizations to try to track him down.”

“Unfortunately, once a video is posted we are behind in knowing where he is at that point,” Mamers explained. “He does have very active social media.”

‘Need for Truth’

Mara Ferdinand made an emotional appeal directly to the public seeking assistance in finding her husband’s killer.

“We, Mike’s family, are appealing to those who are protecting Tyjae to remember that my husband lost his life. Our family is living with a loss that cannot be repaired and we’re asking for the community’s help not out of anger but out of a need for truth and accountability.”

“Mike loved Christmas… This will be our third Christmas without Mike and there has been no justice,” she said.
