There are eight new fire starts reported in northwestern Ontario, though the total number of active fires has decreased to 127.

Out of these fires, 30 are not under control, six are being contained, five have been brought under control, and 86 are currently being monitored.

The new fires include Thunder Bay 71 (THU071), situated near Muskeg Lake, about 17 kilometres northeast of Highway 17. This fire covers an area of 0.1 hectares and is not under control.

Thunder Bay 72 (THU072) can be found near the southeast end of Lac des Mille Lacs, roughly 15 kilometres north of Highway 11. It also spans 0.1 hectares and is not under control.

Thunder Bay 73 (THU073) is located approximately two kilometres southeast of Combe Lake and east of Hunkin Lake. This fire is likewise not under control and measures 0.1 hectares.

Sioux Lookout 113 (SLK113) sits about 1.5 kilometres southwest of Patte Lake. This fire has a size of one hectare and is currently being observed.

Nipigon 89 (NIP089) is positioned around 1.5 kilometres west of Rocke Lake with an area of 0.2 hectares; it remains out of control.

Nipigon 90 (NIP090) can be found about five kilometres southwest of Nonwatin Lake and north of Shillabeer Lake. This fire covers an area of 0.1 hectares and is not controlled.

Nipigon 91 (NIP091) is near Highway 11, approximately three kilometers northwest of Longlac Bay, with a size of 0.2 hectares that remains uncontrolled.

Lastly, Nipigon 92 (NIP092) lies east of Long Lake and northwest of Spider Lake at a size measuring 0.2 hectares; this fire too is not contained.

Many recent starts were triggered by lightning strikes from storms that moved through the region earlier this week.

Regarding major ongoing fires, additional crews have been assigned to manage those burning in the Wabikimi Provincial Park area.

The Ministry of Natural Resources’ Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services reports that there’s been an uptick in fire activity over the past few days, with the largest blaze now covering an area of around 307,271 hectares.

Aerial suppression efforts continue while ground teams tackle hot spots directly.

Fires around Lac Des Milles Lac and in the northern section of Quetico Provincial Park have shown relatively low activity recently without significant expansion over weeks.

Firefighting teams are addressing hot spots on both fires with support from helicopters above.
