A Norwegian firm is investing $3.2 billion to construct an artificial graphite plant in southwestern Ontario.

Vianode CEO Burkhard Straube says it would assemble the plant in St. Thomas, Ont., and can initially create 300 jobs and ramp as much as 1,000 jobs as soon as the plant is working at full capability.

Straube says artificial graphite is the largest element by weight in electrical car batteries, however can be important for nuclear reactors and defence programs.

Volkswagen’s battery firm, PowerCo, has lately damaged floor on its huge gigafactory in St. Thomas, although Straube wouldn’t touch upon any doable offers with the automaker.
