The province’s police watchdog is looking into an incident where a person broke free from police custody and was later hurt in St. Thomas on Saturday.
At about 12:15 p. m., an Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer along with a St. Thomas police officer were transporting someone in their custody when the suspect “exited the moving police vehicle,” OPP said.
The individual then ran away on foot near Wellington and Talbot roads, according to the police.
The OPP emergency response team, canine unit, aviation services, and officers joined forces with nearby police departments to search for the suspect, as stated by OPP.
Authorities located the suspect close to Major Line in St. Thomas, leading to their re-arrest. Police reported that upon being found, the suspect needed medical attention and was taken to a hospital for an “assessment of injuries.”
The Special Investigations Unit has activated its mandate. The agency investigates situations involving law enforcement and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
