St. Catharines and Niagara Falls were placed under a red tornado warning by Environment Canada early Sunday afternoon, with the federal agency also noting that Niagara, Hamilton, Burlington, and Bradford faced potential heavy rain until later in the evening.

This tornado warning for St. Catharines and Niagara Falls followed a recent incident where parts of St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake experienced severe flooding due to heavy rainfall.

Just before 1 p. m., as the tornado warnings triggered an alert on cell phones in the region, a fierce storm hit north Niagara Falls, bringing heavy rain, poor visibility, strong winds, and power outages. Shortly after this, Environment Canada lifted the tornado warnings.

The agency then issued special weather statements for Hamilton, Burlington, and Brantford regarding possible heavy rainfall on Sunday.

Environment Canada had also issued a yellow warning for Niagara Falls, predicting localized rainfall that could exceed 50 millimeters on Sunday morning and afternoon along with multiple thunderstorms likely occurring.

“Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas,” the agency said. “Some property damage is possible.”

The agency advised residents against driving through flooded streets and warned to be cautious of washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts.

The yellow warning for St. Catharines forecasted periods of heavy rain with a risk of thunderstorms later in the day; local rainfall amounts could reach between 40 to 50 millimeters. Showers were expected to taper off late Sunday evening but there remained a chance of thunderstorms in the evening.

For Hamilton, forecasts indicated localized heavy rainfall up to 50 millimeters throughout Sunday morning into the evening. Water pooling was expected on roads and in low areas while visibility might suddenly drop at times according to Environment Canada.

The agency also provided special weather statements for Brantford’s and Burlington suggesting they could see between 30 to 40 millimeters of rain tonight along with a 60 percent chance of showers later today plus some risk of thunderstorms.
