Provincial police report that a man has been charged with an upgraded murder offense and an added first-degree murder charge related to the deaths of two individuals in southwestern Ontario last month.

Authorities say that on the morning of October 5, they were summoned to a residence in Simcoe where they discovered 71-year-old Barbara Morgan deceased.

A 45-year-old man was taken into custody on a second-degree murder charge concerning her death, which police later confirmed involved her son as the suspect.

On October 16, OPP reported finding remains in a wooded area near Highway 6, which were later identified as belonging to 49-year-old Robert Sykes, who died from homicide.

The suspect is now facing two counts of first-degree murder after the previous second-degree charge was elevated.

Authorities say the accused is due to appear in court in Simcoe on Friday.

This report by The Canadian Press was first November 28, 2025.
