A 35-year-old man has lost his life following a single-vehicle accident on Highway 401 in Mississauga, according to provincial police.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sgt. Kerry Schmidt reported that the incident took place near Winston Churchill Boulevard just before 6 a. m. on Friday.
Initially, police indicated it was a multi-vehicle crash; however, Schmidt clarified that only one vehicle was involved in the incident.
“A pickup truck collided with the crash cushion, the end treatment that separates the express from the collector lanes. That vehicle was then redirected into the express lanes where it came to a rest,” he said.
The driver was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but sadly succumbed later. Initially, authorities mentioned he was 36 years old but later confirmed he was actually 35.
The eastbound express lanes of the highway are closed from approaching Mississauga Road to Mavis Road. The OPP stated that this area is expected to reopen between noon and 1 p. m.
