A man with over 30 years of experience in fire services has been selected as the Interim Fire Chief for the Town of Whitby.

Mark Pankhurst has served as both a Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief in Ajax, Kawartha Lakes, and Rama. He has also held a role at the provincial level as a Fire Services liaison with the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs.

Pankhurst will officially take over on March 16, succeeding Michael Hickey, who began his term earlier in 2023.

Hickey started with the Whitby Fire Service as a volunteer firefighter back in 1998. He was hired full-time in 2000 and climbed the ranks to become Deputy Fire Chief in 2021.

The search for a permanent Whitby Fire Chief is currently underway.
