The Windsor Police Association is urging Ontario’s Inspector General to concentrate their review specifically on the Toronto Police Service.
This week, Ryan Teschner, the Inspector General of Policing, announced a province-wide independent review of policing services due to a corruption scandal involving several officers from Toronto.
As part of this review, Teschner indicated he would examine police supervision, the screening and vetting process for officers, access to police databases and information systems, evidence and property management practices, as well as substance abuse and fitness for duty.
In a statement, Windsor Police Association President Kent Rice emphasized that not all police services should be tainted by corruption allegations.
“There is no evidence of widespread corruption across Ontario. It would be unfair and inappropriate to allow an isolated matter to cast doubt on the integrity of thousands of dedicated police officers who serve honourably in communities across Ontario,” said Rice in his statement.
Rice mentioned that his members are dedicated to maintaining high ethical standards and professionalism in their work.
“We respectfully ask that the Inspector General’s review remain focused on the Toronto Police Service at this time. If and only if credible, evidence-based findings arising from that review demonstrate broader systemic concerns across multiple services, then the Inspector General can consider expanding the scope in a measured way,” said Rice. “A focused approach protects the integrity of officers and services not implicated in the allegations while ensuring any expansion is justified by facts, not assumptions.”
The Police Association of Ontario issued a similar message.
“To paint all our members with the same brush is not fair to the thousands who come to work every day to ensure the safety and security of our communities. Throughout this process, we stand united with our 33,000 members across Ontario,” read a statement from the Police Association of Ontario.
