A man from Windsor was charged after he failed to change lanes when he encountered a tow truck and an OPP cruiser parked on the road’s shoulder while driving.

The OPP was helping the tow truck driver following a crash on Hwy. 401 in Lakeshore on Thursday afternoon, when the vehicle zoomed by.

The OPP stopped the driver and suspected that he was also impaired by alcohol.

The 42-year-old now faces charges for operating a motor vehicle while impaired, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and not moving into another lane for an emergency vehicle or tow truck.

“The OPP urges all drivers to respect Ontario’s Move Over Law. When approaching an emergency vehicle stopped with its lights flashing, motorists must slow down and, if safe, move into another lane,” said an OPP release. “This law is designed to protect police, paramedics, tow truck operators, and other roadside workers.”

Not following this law could lead to fines, demerit points, and even serious injury or death.

The Windsor man’s license has been suspended for 90 days; his vehicle will be impounded for a week, and he’s scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor on February 27.
