Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning that a major winter storm will affect areas around Lake Erie, bringing a tough weekend for 30 states in the U. S.

Some forecasters in America are labeling this system, which stretches across much of the continental U. S., “a generational storm.”

“It’s a very, very large system,” said Meteorologist Eric Thomlinson. “It will intensify as it taps into that Gulf [of Mexico] moisture, and with all of that moisture that it’s picking up, it has quite a large area of precipitation, and it’s the northern edge that could impact us.”

People in the U. S. are preparing for extreme cold, rain, freezing rain, and snow.

Thomlinson believes the effects in Southwestern Ontario won’t be as severe but mentioned that models indicate bitter cold for Friday and Saturday, along with snow on Sunday.

“Seeing as the system is passing south of Ontario, areas closer to Lake Erie, as well as the Greater Toronto Area, those are the areas that we’re really watching for those higher snowfall amounts,” said Thomlinson, suggesting places like Windsor and Chatham-Kent could receive 10 cm of snow.

He warned that there’s still some uncertainty in the models; however, by Friday they should have a clearer picture of what to expect.

The current models predict overnight temperatures on Friday will fall to -21 C.

As we move into early next week, Thomlinson noted that temperatures will rise slightly but remain low. He expects daytime highs between -5 C and -10 C.
