Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning that regions near Lake Erie will face a significant winter storm that’s likely to bring a challenging weekend for 30 U. S. states.

Some forecasters in the U. S. refer to this system, which spans much of the continental U. S., as “a generational storm.”

“It’s a very, very large system,” said Meteorologist Eric Thomlinson. “It will intensify as it taps into that Gulf [of Mexico] moisture, and with all of that moisture that it’s picking up, it has quite a large area of precipitation, and it’s the northern edge that could impact us.”

Americans are getting ready for harsh cold, rain, freezing rain, and snow.

Thomlinson believes the effects in Southwestern Ontario won’t be as severe but mentioned that models indicate frigid temperatures for Friday and Saturday, with snow expected on Sunday.

“Seeing as the system is passing south of Ontario, areas closer to Lake Erie, as well as the Greater Toronto Area, those are the areas that we’re really watching for those higher snowfall amounts,” said Thomlinson, noting that Windsor and Chatham-Kent might receive around 10 cm of snow.

He also pointed out that while models remain uncertain at this stage, they should have more clarity on potential impacts by Friday.

The current models suggest temperatures overnight on Friday could drop to -21 C.

Looking ahead to early next week, Thomlinson noted there would be a slight increase in temperature but only marginally. He predicted daytime highs between -5 C and -10 C.
