A parcel of land in Southampton has been handed over to the Saugeen First Nation due to a recent violation of the Ontario Heritage Act.

The Saugeen Shores Police Service reported that officers were alerted in November 2022 about an event that took place at 6 South Rankin Street, where a protected archaeological site is located.

After a detailed investigation, the property owner and a numbered Ontario company faced charges for not complying with section 48(1)(2) of the Ontario Heritage Act and section 8(1) of the Ontario Building Code.

On May 5, 2026, the Ontario Court of Justice Provincial Division met at the James Mason Memorial Culture and Recreation Centre on Saugeen First Nation, where the defendant admitted guilt regarding the Ontario Heritage Act violation.

Consequently, the property at 6 South Rankin Street in Southampton has been transferred to Saugeen First Nation. Additionally, $30,000 was paid to them for property remediation, a written apology from the accused was given to Saugeen First Nation, and a fine of $3,500 plus victim surcharge was imposed by the Courts.
