Enbridge Gas is backing 13 Indigenous fire departments across Ontario.
“Through Safe Community Project Zero and Safe Community Project Assist, Indigenous fire departments are receiving valuable resources that will strengthen local fire safety efforts and help protect families for years to come,” said Ontario Fire Marshal Jon Pegg.
Walpole Island First Nation, Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, and Saugeen First Nation are all benefiting from Project Assist.
The program provides grants to fire departments to purchase training materials and public education resources. This year, the grants are worth $5,000.
“Prevention, education, and preparedness are the foundation of safer communities,” Pegg said. “Public education provides residents with the knowledge of how to prevent and react to emergencies, while ongoing training helps ensure firefighters are equipped to respond effectively.”
Since Project Assist was launched in 2012, more than 400 grants have been awarded to fire departments across the province.
Project Zero provides free combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to fire departments, which can then be distributed to the community.
The number of alarms distributed is based on the approximate population served by each local fire department. This year, seven Indigenous communities will receive a total of 522 alarms.
Jennifer Burnham, President of Enbridge Gas Ontario, said the company is proud to support Indigenous fire departments.
“These investments help provide life-saving equipment, training opportunities and public education resources that strengthen community resilience and help keep people safe,” Burnham said.
