The company that operates the Ambassador Bridge is opposing the City of Windsor’s efforts to expropriate multiple properties in the west end.
In August, the city started moving forward with plans to expropriate 45 properties in Olde Sandwich Towne, many of which are abandoned and boarded-up homes.
The Canadian Transit Company has requested a hearing of necessity from the Ontario Land Tribunal after receiving notice of intent.
“We’ll just go through the process. We expected that they would probably do that, so it wasn’t a shock to us to receive that letter,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
The CTC provided this statement when the initial plan was revealed.
“These expropriations will only result in unnecessary conflict, delay, and taxpayer expense. There is an easy solution where we demolish all of the structures – the City just has to permit this — and then transfer almost all of these properties to the City. The City is well aware that CTC has been willing to do so for years in exchange for those portions of roadways needed for our plaza expansion project,” said the company in its statement.
A hearing before the Ontario Land Tribunal has not yet been scheduled.
