A heartbreaking event took place in Richmond Hill, Ontario, when a 71-year-old man named Vinay Kumar Gupta accidentally drove his electric SUV into the First Roots Early Education Academy. This incident occurred on September 10, 2025, and tragically led to the death of 18-month-old Liam Riazati along with injuries to 24 other children and three staff members. The crash happened around 3 p. m. as Gupta was trying to pick up his grandchildren but mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake, driving his Hyundai Ioniq 9 through the daycare’s walls.

The SUV crashed through three rooms, resulting in serious injuries including one boy aged three-and-a-half who suffered life-changing injuries and a girl aged 22 months who had broken bones. Gupta admitted guilt to charges of dangerous driving that caused death and bodily harm during a Zoom court appearance in Newmarket.

Understanding Your Rights

Ontario law gives victims of car accidents a way to seek compensation via the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS). This system allows those injured to claim benefits for medical costs, rehabilitation services, and sometimes income replacement. If you or your loved ones have experienced something similar, it’s essential to act within the limitation period which is usually two years from the date of the accident as outlined by the Limitations Act 2002.

Talking with experienced legal professionals can help clarify your rights and what compensation you may qualify for. They’ll assist you in filing claims, collecting necessary evidence, and ensuring your legal rights are upheld throughout this process.
