Richmond Hill, Ontario – June 26, 2026

Yesterday, a significant press conference took place in Richmond Hill, Ontario, to officially kick off the construction of a permanent memorial for the victims of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752. The ceremony was attended by key civic leaders, provincial and federal representatives, as well as family members who lost their loved ones on that fateful day.

Notable Guests

Among those present were Richmond Hill Mayor David West, members of the Richmond Hill City Council, community representative Ali Ehsasi, Mr. Mangakis, and Mr. Vincent Ho. Also in attendance were Members of Parliament and Steven Lecce, Ontario’s Minister of Education and provincial government representative, highlighting the strong institutional support behind this memorial project.

The involvement of families affected by PS752 added profound meaning to the event – serving as a reminder that each policy initiative and community project is rooted in real human loss.

A Long-Awaited Project

This memorial will be located in Unity Park in Richmond Hill and is the result of years of teamwork among the Iranian-Canadian community association, the City of Richmond Hill, the Government of Ontario, and the Government of Canada. It represents a significant collaboration between community advocacy and government support at multiple levels.

Officials expressed hope that the memorial would be unveiled on January 8, 2027 – marking seven years since the tragedy – a date filled with deep meaning for survivors and their families.

A Space for Remembrance and Justice

In addition to being a site for mourning, this memorial aims to serve as an enduring public acknowledgment of historical truth. On January 8, 2020, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shot down a civilian aircraft shortly after it took off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport. All 176 passengers and crew members died in this incident – including an unborn child – which families and many around the world have never accepted as just an accident.

The memorial will remind visitors that innocent lives were lost here; accountability has not yet been fully achieved; and that seeking justice remains ongoing – it isn’t just something from the past.

Ongoing Pursuit for Justice

For families and advocates who have dedicated years to demanding transparency and accountability regarding this tragedy, yesterday’s groundbreaking symbolizes progress rather than an end point. Their message is clear:

We will neither forget nor forgive – until the truth is fully revealed and justice is served.
