A 28-year-old man has been taken into custody and charged with several offences related to a sexual assault in Renfrew, according to the Ontario Provincial Police on Friday.
The police report mentioned that the man was arrested by the Ottawa Police Service on Sept. 9 and subsequently brought to the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke. He is currently being held while awaiting a bail hearing set for Sept. 26 in Pembroke.
The charges include: assault; assault with a weapon; sexual assault; forcible confinement; overcoming resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle; pointing a firearm; two counts of making threats to cause death or bodily harm; criminal harassment; intimidation; mischief; obstructing a peace officer; and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
The OPP stated that they cannot disclose the man’s identity to protect the victim’s privacy.
On Aug. 28, a woman reported to the OPP that she had been held against her will and sexually assaulted in Renfrew, located about 90 kilometres west of Ottawa. She also mentioned that the suspect was someone she knew and that he had a handgun.
Following this incident, members of the Renfrew detachment of the OPP, along with an emergency response team, canine unit, and tactics and rescue unit conducted a search of the area. A shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents until officers confirmed that the suspect had left.
