A 28-year-old man has been taken into custody and charged with several offenses related to a sexual assault that occurred in Renfrew, according to the Ontario Provincial Police on Friday.
A press release mentioned that the man was arrested by the Ottawa Police Service on Sept. 9 and subsequently brought to the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke. He is currently being held pending a bail hearing scheduled to continue in Pembroke on Sept. 26.
The charges against him include: assault; assault with a weapon; sexual assault; forcible confinement; attempting to choke, suffocate, or strangle; pointing a firearm; two counts of making threats to cause death or bodily harm; criminal harassment; intimidation; mischief; obstructing a peace officer; and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
The OPP stated that the man’s identity cannot be disclosed in order to protect the victim’s privacy.
On Aug. 28, a woman informed the OPP that she had been confined against her will and sexually assaulted in Renfrew, located approximately 90 kilometers west of Ottawa. She also reported that the man, whom she knew, was armed with a handgun.
This incident led to an extensive search by officers from the Renfrew detachment of the OPP, including members from the emergency response team, canine unit, and tactics and rescue unit. A shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents until authorities confirmed that the suspect had left the area.
