Submitted photo Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has announced that it is looking into the death of a 48-year-old man near Paisley on February 21. In a media statement released on Sunday, the SIU mentioned that initial information indicates the man is suspected of committing several motor vehicle thefts and breaking into homes across multiple areas during the day, which included taking a firearm. The SIU did not confirm the man’s identity and refrained from commenting on names circulating online. The agency also chose not to disclose his residence. However, the report noted that police made several efforts to find him as events unfolded throughout the day. Officers found him in the afternoon driving a stolen vehicle. Police used a tire deflation device, causing the vehicle to come off the road. The man then ran away on foot, and police say he was eventually located near Sideroad 13 and Bruce-Saugeen Townline. Outside a residence, he confronted police officers. During this encounter, one officer discharged his weapon and hit him. Life-saving measures were performed at the scene. He was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The SIU release does not clarify whether he was armed at the time of the shooting or if they recovered the reportedly stolen firearm. The agency has also not shared how many shots were fired or how many officers were involved during this interaction. Four investigators along with three forensic investigators have been assigned to look into this case. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for February 23. The SIU encourages anyone with information, including videos or photos, to get in touch with the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or via their website. When the SIU activates its mandate, it takes charge of investigating incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury, or claims of sexual assault. The involved police department does not provide further information while investigations are ongoing. Owen Sound Current will keep updating this story as more details emerge. Share Related:
