A combined investigation by the South Bruce OPP and Saugeen Shores Police Service is currently taking place following what authorities described as a serious vehicle collision in downtown Port Elgin on Saturday afternoon.
A black pickup truck remained at the closed intersection of Gustavus Street and Goderich Street (Highway 21) for several hours while police examined the area – car parts were scattered across the road, and multiple vehicles that were either parked or driving on Gustavus Street suffered heavy damage.
A shopper in the vicinity reported seeing a man flee from the scene of the crash.
Though no direct link has been established, a local taxi driver is recovering from a head injury caused by a man who attempted to steal her cab just around the corner from where the crash happened Saturday afternoon.
The neighbor of the victim, who wished to remain anonymous for privacy reasons, shared that the taxi driver came to their Waterloo Street apartment bleeding from her head wound and asked his wife for assistance. She mentioned she was returning home when a man struck her, and he ran off when he couldn’t get her vehicle started. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Saugens Shores police provided an update at 6:30 p. m. via social media regarding the collision, stating there was an “active investigation between the Saugeen Shores Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. There are no concerns for public safety. No further details will be released at this time.”

As of now, it’s unclear how everything connects, but about an hour later at 7:30 p. m., an OPP West Region social media post indicated that police had resumed regular patrols, and they ended their increased presence south of Port Elgin between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road on Bruce-Saugeen Townline. An update at 9:10 p. m. mentioned that investigators were continuing their localized onsite examination while keeping Bruce-Saugeen Townline closed in that area.
Earlier at 4:44 p. m., OPP West Region announced that Bruce-Saugeen Townline was closed due to heavy police activity in that area and advised drivers to consider alternative routes. Authorities confirmed there was no threat to public safety.
