Another location of The Beer Store in Durham is set to close its doors for good.

The store at 1355 Kington Road, next to the Pickering mall, The Shops at Pickering Town Centre, will officially shut down after November 2.

A statement from the company indicated that this was not an easy choice.

“Where we sell beer and collect empties is changing in Ontario as part of market modernization,” said Ozzie Ahmed, VP Retail at The Beer Store. “In an ongoing process, The Beer Store is adapting to market changes and making the hard decision to close retail locations. We know this is difficult news for consumers, recyclers and our employees. The Beer Store recognizes the contributions our employees make to the business and in the communities where we operate. All efforts will be made to support employees through this process in alignment with commitments and agreements.”

The Pickering location is one of six stores across Ontario impacted by this recent announcement.

The Beer Store has introduced a new empty return locator tool to help people find spots where they can return their empties more easily.

All grocery stores selling alcohol will have to accept empty returns starting January 1, 2026.
