A man from Peterborough is facing multiple charges after police reported that he attempted to use paper license plates-secured in a plastic sleeve and taped up-as real ones.

Traffic Services officers stopped the 45‑year‑old driver at around 10:15 a. m. on January 10, near Romaine Street and Park Street. The stop happened because the vehicle’s license plate was found to belong to an entirely different car registered in Mississauga.

This was the first indication something was off.

A further inspection revealed the second issue: those weren’t actual plates at all. According to investigators, the driver had created homemade paper plates, placed them into a plastic cover, and affixed them to his vehicle with tape.

Now, the driver faces several charges, including using a plate not authorized for his vehicle, using a plate not according to regulations, failing to apply for a permit as a new owner, and driving without insurance on public roads.

He has been given a court date set for March 23, 2026.

While police didn’t comment on how well-made the paper plates were, they emphasized that makeshift tags-even if neatly laminated-don’t fulfill Ontario’s legal standards.
