The province is broadening its Ontario Learn and Stay Grant program to support nursing students at Trent University and Fleming College. This initiative aims to boost the health-care workforce in Peterborough and throughout eastern Ontario.

An additional $14 million investment has been announced, which will allow around 1,500 nursing students at these institutions to have their tuition, books, and other essential education costs covered starting this fall, as long as they agree to work in eastern Ontario after graduation.

Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn visited Trent on Tuesday morning to share the news.

This expansion is part of a larger strategy by the province to tackle health-care staffing shortages by training more professionals in high-demand areas and motivating them to stay within those communities.

Trent President Cathy Bruce expressed her support for this announcement.

Theresa Knott, Interim President at Fleming, mentioned that this growth stems from excellent teamwork.

The province states it has invested over $175 million into the program thus far, helping nearly 13,000 students across Ontario. Of this amount, almost $54 million has been directed towards training over 4,000 future health-care workers in eastern Ontario.

Applications for the Fall 2026 term are now available through the provincial government’s Learn and Stay portal.
