On Saturday, November 7, engineering experts, researchers, and industry leaders will come together at Fleming College for the 2026 Peterborough Engineering Symposium. The focus will be on Canadian nuclear technology, covering everything from Canadian Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactors to small modular reactors, fusion energy, and more.
This event will take place at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus in Peterborough and will last throughout the day. Attendees can expect discussions about the development of Canada’s nuclear sector and the technologies that will shape its future. Presentations will highlight CANDU technology, small modular reactors (SMRs), fusion advancements, and strategies for managing nuclear waste. There will also be panel discussions that address topics like the Canadian nuclear landscape, workforce development, and environmental factors related to sustainable nuclear energy.
The symposium is set to feature speakers from various organizations such as BWXT, Ontario Power Generation, Ontario Tech University, and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. Confirmed speakers include Ralph Granz and Andrew Long from BWXT; Hossam Gaber and Les Jacobs from Ontario Tech University; Sara Dolatshahi of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization; Aiman Khan of Candu Energy Inc., part of Atkins Réalis; along with Muhammad Mahad from Ontario Power Generation.
“This symposium brings together experts from across the nuclear sector to share knowledge, examine emerging technologies, and discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead,” said Dr. Fereydoon Diba, Director and Principal Researcher at Fleming College’s Centre for Applied Machine Intelligence and Integration Technologies (CAMIIT). “As Canada looks to expand its clean energy capacity, these conversations are important to advancing innovation, strengthening collaboration, and preparing the skilled workforce needed for the next generation of nuclear technology.”
Registration kicks off at 9 a. m., with presentations starting at 10 a. m. The program includes college tours as well as chances to check out information tables before wrapping up at 4 p. m.
The 2026 Peterborough Engineering Symposium is organized by the IEEE Peterborough Section along with Professional Engineers Ontario – Peterborough Chapter, Fleming CAMIIT, and Brilliant Energy Institute – Ontario Tech University.
