A two-year-old girl was airlifted to a hospital in the Toronto area after a woman and five young children were hit by a car in Oshawa on Wednesday.
The crash took place on Wednesday.
According to police, a 62-year-old woman driving a white Volvo was headed south on Niagara Drive when she made a left turn onto Sheridan Street just before 9:30 a. m., hitting the group as they crossed the street. The intersection where this happened only has a two-way stop, and the driver did not have a stop sign prior to her turn.
The girl was taken to the hospital with critical injuries and later airlifted to Sick Kids, where she is currently stable. Four other children were transported to a local hospital; one suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries while three had minor injuries. The oldest child was three years old, and the youngest was just seven months old.
The woman involved was an employee at a nearby daycare and was out for her daily walk with children registered at the facility.
She also went to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The 62-year-old driver stayed at the scene and was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
“There was no indication that there was any under the influence or any other criminal elements involved in their driving capacity at this point,” said Const. Nick Gluckstein. He added that this incident is still being investigated.
“We want all drivers to slow down, obey the speed limits, obey the rules and regulations of the road. If you’re coming across roadways … where there are no stop signs, we are making sure that if there are pedestrians in the area, we’re making visual eye contact with them so that we know that they known that we’re there and that they’re crossing the road.”
He mentioned they managed to reach out to the two-year-old’s parents. The mother arrived at the hospital and flew with her child in the air ambulance while police escorted the father directly to Toronto’s hospital.
Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact police.
