Earthquake Shakes Peterborough Tuesday Evening

A magnitude 3.7 earthquake shook central and southern Ontario late on Tuesday night.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the quake hit at 10:59 p. m., with its epicenter about 23 kilometres southeast of Orillia, at a depth of five kilometres.

Social media quickly lit up with reports of shaking and, in some instances, a loud roar or bang.

Earthquakes Canada received over 2,600 calls from areas stretching from Kitchener in the west to Belleville in the east, including Toronto and the Niagara region. Alex Lamore, who resides in northwest Peterborough, was one of many locals who took to Facebook asking “So who else just experienced a house shake?”

Lamore mentioned that the experience was quite unsettling at first.

He added that this earthquake seems to fit into what central Ontario has been experiencing recently.

Earthquakes Canada states that this area has had two similar-sized earthquakes in the past 25 years along with a magnitude 5.5 quake back in 1929.
